It depends on how severe the cheating is. It could be anything from the exam being awarded 0 marks to being disqualified from all of your subjects.

Depends, but the most severe punishment would be the exam board deciding for you not to sit any of your exams with the same exam board.

So say if you cheated blatantly in a maths exam with edexcel, the exam board can decide for you to not sit any exams you may have with edexcel again. But that's for something really severe.

Obvious cheating would lead to disqualification, depending on the level this could lead to just a ban from the exam you got caught on, to all your exams being disregarded, to forfeiting your right to sit exams for a period of time.
GCSE are easy to do well on and fairly pointless, after a year or 2, why risk your future reputation and ability to progress in life on something as trivial as gcse's.

From what my school tells us, the punishment is not being able to sit any kind of formal exam for 5 years. So basically, cheating in your GCSEs screws your whole life up because then you can’t do A levels/BTECs whatever (or the rest of your GCSEs, which means you can’t get an apprenticeship or whatever).

People on here will tell their success stories of cheating in formal exams, but trust me it’s not worth it. You only ever hear about the success stories, not the people who get caught - honestly I would never risk it. It’s not worth risking your entire future for!

The penalty can range from a warning to being banned from public exams for a period of time (e.g. 2 years) . The most common sanctions are to get 0 marks for a single paper or a single qualification. Some cases of cheating (e.g. stealing the exam papers) can lead to prosecution.

Paper gets cancelled. Your name is blacklisted by boards. It is a crime.
