Guys...I need help. What do I need to know for organic chemistry? I mean, I know the basics like the alkanes and alkenes, but I mean for the really tough ones like how are carboxylics formed, and what the heck - how they react with water, air, etc. Does anyone have any notes that establish all of that with alcohols, alkenes, esters, etc?

I'm currently taking A- level chemistry and I usually find Chem revise very helpful! Best of luck.

an alcohol reacts with an oxidising agent to form a carboxylic acid
they can react with a carbonate to form a salt, CO2 and h20
e.g ethanoic acid sodium carbonate -----> sodium ethanoate water carbon dioxide
carboxylic acids can dissolve in water but because they ionise partially they form weak acidic solutions with a high pH
an alcohol and a carboxylic acid makes an ester and water (an acid catalyst is usually used)
if you dont understand condensation polymerisation watch freesciencelessons video on it
thats pretty much it according to my notes. good luck tomorrow!
