The halogen produces free radical •Cl atoms
These free radical •Cl atoms remove a hydrogen from the ethane making an ethyl free radical, •C2H5.
Two of these can "pair up" in a termination step to form butane.

Consider that all molecular products of this reaction will be the result of 2 free radicals combining by forming a new bond.

Now study the chemical equations in the free radical steps for the chlorination of ethane in UV light. See the types of free radicals formed throughout the process , and compare these to your possible answers A- D
