How religious are they? Is there a chance they will kick you out, or emotionally abuse you if you tell them?

Btw this is a real difficult situation, it sucks. I hope you are doing ok.

My Jewish friend announced her atheism to her family by eating a bacon sandwich in front of them.

You don't have to tell them. I mean you make it sound like you're in the closet.

It isn't a big deal, especially if they're likely to distance you from them. Either you be up front or just leave it.

I'm in the same boat lol and I wear a headscarf, I'm gonna take off my scarf when I start going uni. You don't have to tell them. If you think your family would understand then just initiate a religion-related convo like idk how the world started or heaven and hell and be like "yeah I don't believe in religion anymore" I'm personally not gonna tell them because I value my life lol

Depends on the devout-ness of the parents/family.

I can't tell my (Muslim) family because I'd cause they a lot of distress and they'd probably do something drastic. I desperately want to move out, but it'd destroy them. It's a sticky situation.

If you're not Desi, then I'd say just tell them and be polite about it.

I'm a guy, but I do agree. Are you female? It's next to impossible for a girl, unless she gets married (disgusting, I know). We are all quite equally oppressed in my family, but I there certainly is a (minuscule) possibility of me moving out (for my PhD, assuming my Masters goes well next year) without being disowned, but it will be very, very hard- I most likely will be disowned.
