hi, im doing the same exam, my teacher gave taught us the period and showed us historial continuity and differences in the period. eg. weapons, influence of the industrial revoultion, the importance of conscription and political impact during the period.
Reply 2
so we should be focusing on the theme e.g weapons and see how it changed through the different periods of time?
Reply 3
yeah thats one type of change in the period, but there are others such as growing nationalism in european countries influencing public opinion.
Reply 4
our teacher didn't teach us public opinion cause he thought it wouldn't come up. We learnt about weapons, armies, leadership, strategies & tactics, industrialisation, logistics & peace but he didn't teach them very well!

Hello i was just wondering if this is the same topic as mine because it sounds like it however mine comes under 2591-War and Society in Britain 1793 - 1918 ?
Reply 6
yeah its the same unit, 2591, its unlikely public opinion will come up but there has been a past paper where it asks about public opinion. Im just revising weapons, tactics and strategy, transport and some historians views.
Reply 7
did you learn these for the following times: napoleonic wars, american civil war & great war. that's what my teacher said to focus on. Like if the question is on weapons then i talk about how weapons were used/changed in those three time periods?

do we need to know historian views? i wasn't taught that!
Reply 8
yeah i learnt about those periods but there are other mid 19th century wars, such as the crimean war, wars of unification, franco-prussian war which shows the use of railways and the use of general staff. My teacher gave us historians books such as michael howard and john keegan's books and asked us to use thier views as well.
Reply 9
okay, i think i'm getting the idea of how to answer the question. i think i'm going to make different mind maps of each theme and list the differences between the periods of time.
Reply 10
kool... dont forget about continuity between the wars in the period, such as the use of horses.

good point! thanks
jus wondering guys.. been reading the examiners notes for this exam and they keep stressing that we should answer ''thematically'' rather than chronologically.

this is fudged because my teacher said to answer it chronologically - can anyone take a shot at explaining to me how we would answer it ''thematically?''

thanks

I'm not doing the exam but I did my history A-level last year. My guess would be that it wnats you to compare the two periods for different parts.

Eg. Weaponry in 1792 Vs 1918 big difference as WWI was first time airplanes were used, mechanised slaughter etc.

Tactics in 1792 Vs 1918 WWI saw the emergence of tanks in warfare and the use of aerial recon.

Generally if you just list dates and don't link anything you'll get a bad mark.

Hope this helped. Good luck:smile:

in this exam, dont we get 3 questions?? im really hoping its somet to do with industrilisation, mass conscription they seem good for me

also i dont think we need to know historians views, our teacher never taught us them and said we dont need to know historians points of views... but if u can put them in im sure it would be good,

could you share sonme views??
We didn't learn historian views either.

For our class we've focused on:

Revolutionary Period
Napoleonic
Crimean
Franco-Austrian
Wars Of German Unification
WWI

And I've done theme plans for:
Mass Conscription
Public Opinion
Strategy
Tactics
Leadership
Technological Developments - Military & Non-Military
Morale
Resources, Supplies & Logisitics
Alliances
Governmental Involvement
Extent Of Industrialisation

& that's all the major themes we've been going through and all the ones that i've seen in past papers.

it's 1:30min exam. There's 3 questions you pick two and you're supposed to spent 45mins on each [[effing hard in my opinion and my teacher says it should be an hour each]]

it's kinda hard for me to go thematically not chronologically since when i write essays i go chronologically whilst employing all the themes.
do it however you can.

plus they give you a handy timeline in the exam for key dates etc.
oh remember to analyse and explain, not describe or be narrative!

thanks for the thumbs up!! i actually thought i had this exam all sorted out.. but all i kept reading yesterday was examiners complaining about how most candidates answered chronologically - and ironically enough, my teacher said this was the best way to go about answering it. apparently, according to my teacher, this is the easiest type exam because its theme based and all runs one after the other - but i don't find it easy, i preferred the other A2 exam i did :frown:
ok so just a quick question.. say in the exam it asks something like ''How did the role of Generalship change throughout the period of 1792 - 1918. Would i be correct in saying that to answer it thematically you would:

1)offer some sort of intro on generalship

2)give examples of bad generalship in different battles - American Civil War (Antietam)

3)give examples of good generalship in different battles - Napoleon, American Civil War (Bull Run - General Jackson,) The Spanish Ulcer (Wellington)

4)list some turning points in generalship techniques e.g promotion on merit rather than wealth etc etc.

Sounds good. Except you should probabaly add some sort of conclusion with your own opinion.

Eg. "I think the turning point came in the Napoleonic War beacuse the French revolution meant people were now promoted with regards to their skill as opposed to their lineage."

I don't know if that's actually true but you get the idea:wink:
