plug in - everyone knows the middle classes hate to part with their money

Well it's been said to me on many occasions that you don't get/stay rich by being generous. Not always borne out by personal experience, but its quite a common saying.

I suspect that would depend whether you watch it 'live' on daytime TV, late night repeat, or sky +

That's not 'a' Volvo, that's *the* Volvo.

Uh oh! I used to watch it 'live' when I was off school sick. Damn.
The Wright Stuff is so much better than Jeremy Kyle

Although the class system is not as evident in current British society as it was even 20 years ago, it definitely still remains; especially in our perceptions of ourselves. I, for one, would consider myself middle class, yet it is hard to pin down exactly why. 'Middle-class' is undoubtedly a wishy-washy term, hence why there is a thread dedicated to the dispute of its meaning, but I do feel that a necessary condition of being middle-class is being, or being the child of, a professional(s) (or at least acting if you do. You can't be intrinsically middle class- it's a social statement). Of course there are degrees of professionals and, accordingly, degrees of being middle class- but in general the practice of pigeon-holing people is far from healthy.

I like writing boring things. (I'm aware that this post is hilariously out of place in a topic which has MOVED ON)
Nothing makes you middle class, you just are. Or, alternatively, you aren't.

ditto.
although now I think about it, having read some posts about education in this thread, only one person from the previous two generations of my family went to university. yet I'm pretty certain I'd be laughed at if I tried to label myself as 'working-class' in real life :s-smilie:

class is...an interesting subject imo. it's easy to jump on a bandwagon and say we've moved on and it doesn't matter, and while that's true in some senses, for a lot of people perceived class contributes significantly to their identity. why and how are the interesting parts

I think this would depend on why you watch it!

If you watch it becuase one of your friends is on, or to see how you can resolve one of your problems this may well affect your m/c status.

If you watch it for laugh then no!!! I go to a private school and most people are middle class, it has to be said. In the common room Jeremy Kyle is regularly on the tv purely for lols!!

Actually you're right in that context it would make you middle class, a little like that class sketch with John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett...

My mum is a teacher and my dad is, essentially, a skilled manual worker (but with a university education).

I'd be intrigued to hear what people think I am. And no-one say "a twirp" please!

Your middle class i would say.My parents earn £90k togetehr so i suppose im middle class.I think its based on eduuation and salary. One of my pets hates though is people who are not middle class thinking they aremiddle class,m no snob but that does annoy me.
defiitions in other societies focus around purely around economic factors

class in the UK is a very different thing, revolving around a persons, values, speech, culture, mannerisms.

standard definitions of what constitutes class thus would not transfer to British society very easily.

:s-smilie:
d'you mean people you consider 'working class' thinking that, or people you consider 'upper class'? why's it so annoying?
(incidentally, I have no idea what my parent's salaries are. I thought that was fairly common, but maybe I'm wrong)
Going on TSR? Going to Lidl especially to buy olive oil or a jar of sundried peppers? Reading The Observer?
