Geostationary orbits are used for transmitting to earth based receivers... the really useful thing being that the satellite remains stationary from the POV of the receiver so an inexpensive fixed 'dish' can be used, rather than one that needs to actively track the satellite.
i.e. satellite TV

Polar orbits are used if you want to the satellite to track over the whole of the earths surface (eventually) - they're useful for earth observation (science or spying) and in large numbers can be used to make a telecommunications network e.g. Iridium
(according to wiki the inclination of Iridium satellites is 86.4 degrees - so they're nearly exactly polar)

Thanks so much for your time
Good thing this didn't come up in the exam though, otherwise I'd be screwed haha!
