All I can gather is that it is commenting on the relationship between Labour and Liberals. I can't match it to any conxtextual knowledge of the time but its in the textbook. Since we've got at least one cartoon coming up on wednesday, anyone have any idea what it is about?

He's sitting on the wrong side of the branch!

Essentially the cartoon is saying that the Labour Party (represented by Keir Hardie in the cartoon on the branch) is going to fall by trying to sever links with the Liberals.

Do you know what date is given for the cartoon? If it's around 1893, then it's suggesting that Keir Hardie, by creating the Independent Labour Party, is liable to destroy Labour altogether, as it relies on Liberal support.

Off the top of my head, I'd say that it's a comment on the Lib-Labs in parliament (which is different to the Lib-Lab pact, confusingly), and Hardie's desire to do away with them. Presumably because he doesn't think the Liberals are radical enough or something. He became the first Labour MP in 1892(?). The ILP is the forerunner of the modern-day Labour party. The cartoonist thinks that he's wrong, and that the Labour movement is a natural (hence the tree) part of the Liberal party, and Hardie is violently breaking up this peaceful relationship.

Thanks to all three of you, I understand the point now. Not sure if its on the OCR spec, but extra knowledge cannot hurt
