Resits for failed exam, or failed module? Maths first year specifically

Hello
After a disastrous analysis and geometry and motion performance today I am slightly concerned about the prospects of having to do resits.

I've asked a few people this but no one seems to know. Do we only have to resit an exam if we fail the whole module, of if we pass the module but fail the june exam?

For maths we get 15% assignment based for most modules so I am unlikely to have failed any modules. I do, however, think it likely that I've failed (got under 40%) in at least one exam.

I've not done too badly overall, hoping for high 2,1, but messed up a couple of specific exams. Really not keen on the prospect of resitting because although I plan to keep up with work over summer anyway, to prepare for year 2, I was planning to be travelling all over america from early august to mid-september.

thanks!

The wording in my module handbook (I do MORSE) seems to indicate that they take into account the whole module mark, as opposed to just the exam, although it's not exactly clear.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if everyone failed Analysis, to be perfectly honest.

Hopefully they will take that into account

Yeah that's what I gathered from my module handbook but as you said it's not too clear.

Are there any second or third years on here who know the answer?

Just that if I know I won't have to do resits I can get on with booking my trip!

My belief (though this was just word of mouth) is that you need to resit if you fail the exam or if you fail the module.

Regardless, I'm resitting Linear Algebra. w00t!
Wait to see your results first, then ask your tutor. Maths modules will be scaled up if they were hard. I think last year geometry and motion got scaled up by about 10 marks. But i'm not sure if this is uniform across the whole range of marks.

Does anyone know the deal with probability?

I know it's not core for maths but i've heard allsorts flying about. I did fine in A but probably failed B. Plus if you're MORSE and you fail B then you have to retake A and B again. Is that correct?

I remember reading somewhere, although I can't remember where, that passing the Analysis exam is a requirement for passing that module.

I think the reasoning behind that decision is that the exam is a test of just the student's abilities, while the example sheets can be collaborative.

My understanding is that if you fail a non-core module but pass the year then there is no problem. (I didn't take Prob B but, from what I hear, it was a difficult paper so your mark may be scaled up.)

Part A and B get combined so you get the total mark of the 2. You never find out the individual marks. So if you did well in A this will help you to pass. Also they will probably scale B. Last year i completely screwed up B but then came out with 68% overall.

Yes but is it the module mark or the june exam mark that counts? for example i am expecting to get under 40% in this year's june analysis exam but got 90% in the january exam and almost full marks in the assignments.

So I should get almost 60% in analysis overall but will I still have to resit?

According to what Koyla said, and what I believe, I think so, yes. Email your tutor?
I'm glad that Prob is combined - I'm not sure I scraped a 40 on B. It was pretty lame.
A was nice though

£60 for resits though :frown:

not with stats modules thoughapparently...

You mean math stats A?
£60 for retakes?!

Harsh.
are the resit exams for modules generally the same level of difficulty or easier than the original ones? im really worried about Microeconomics:frown:
Easier...normally similair to the paper you sat in June. Check past exams to see what i mean.

Just in case anyone is wondering if you have to retake it you fail the exam, you don't. I got an ever so fabulous 32% in the linear algebra exam but got 40something thanks to the assignments counting for 15%.

It was only yesterday that I had a month left to revise, now there's a week :s.
And I still can't find June's paper... it's here somewhere.

What happens if you fail both Probability A and B? I know A is core, but during a lecture in term 1 I'm pretty sure Dave Wood said you're only required to resit Analysis/LinAlgebra/DiffEqs/Geometry and Motion should you fail the exams.. I wish there was a definitive answer to this somewhere

edit - sorry for bumping a year old topic lmao.. I found this topic via google and didn't see the dates
