5^2 is 25 so -5^2 is -25
...but (-5)^2 = 25
@Panicky student Are you computing this on a calculator? Try (-5)^2 and that will give you 25.
-5^2 on a calculator simply computes -(5)^2 = -(25) = -25
-5^2 on a calculator simply computes -(5)^2 = -(25) = -25
