    Why is it that as the number of protons in a nucleus increases the number of nuetrons needed increases at a greater rate. So a larger nucleus needs disproportionatly more nuetrons than a small one.

    This is to dilute the electromagnetic repulsion between the protons; the average distance between each proton increases with the addition of more neutrons, so the EM repulsion between the protons decreases.
