I need some Advice

I currently study Chemistry, Physics and Biology. I really enjoy most of the topics we do however, I prefer more of the Biochem/microbiology topics more than the environmental side of things. I intend to study Biochemistry or microbiology at Uni but I really don't want to go into the field of pharmaceutical / medical side of things post University, and from what I've read finding jobs in either field is difficult and I've been getting contradicting opinions depending on where I read about the courses. Anybody got any advice or knows of a course that Might suit me?

Thanks!
If you enjoy biochem and microbiology topics I would definitely do it as a degree; it will make getting your degree so much easier. Do you have a particular career in mind?

No I don't currently that might be a point I should explore. Thanks!
Biochemistry and Microbiology are two rather different topics.

It's difficult to advise you on a career since there are many, many careers within Microbiology, and within Biochemistry, nevermind within Microbiology AND Biochemistry.

This is a life defining decision. Not everybody gets it right, most don't. The key is it needs to be your decision. Start reading around scientific careers. Find something you want to do.
I would advise refraining from pursuing a degree until you are 100% on what you want to do, or else it’s just £50K down the drain and you might not be any closer to any future career objective you might have.

Microbiology and Biochemistry are separate degrees so I’d advise doing some more research

Hi there,
It might be worth looking at how Biochemistry degrees differ at different universities, as different universities offer slightly different modules. For example, here at Bath our Biochemistry degree focuses on this:

"you will have the option to specialise in specific areas, such as neuroscience, cellular molecular biology, genomics and biotechnology. You will also gain hands-on experience of practical scientific techniques in dedicated undergraduate laboratories, as well as access to specialist technology in research labs...solid foundation for further study or graduate roles where a broader knowledge of molecular biosciences is needed...also be prepared for a wide range of alternative careers."

So, based on this our Biochemistry degree might suit you very well as it is not majorly focused on the pharmaceutical/medical side.

You might also want to take a look at our Natural Sciences degree. This works as a joint honours where you choose a major and a minor subject from Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Physics and Pharmacology. You choose only the modules you're interested in from these subjects, so you don't study modules you aren't interested in. These modules are the exact same modules that people on the straight courses (i.e. Biology or Chemistry) will do, so you are getting the same depth and quality of teaching as everyone else, but you hve the benefit of only doing the modules you want. So, you could for example study Natural Sciences with Biochemistry as a major and chemistry as a minor. You can find more detailed information about the streams and modules here.

I hope this has helped,
Jessica, a third year Natural Sciences student
