Hi,
I have just completed my second year of university and due to be starting my industrial placement next week. However I am beyond terrified and don't know whether to just cancel the whole thing and finish uni next year as planned.

I am currently suffering from a nasty combination of anxiety, depression and an eating disorder (none of which my employer knows about...should I have told them?) and just don't think im going to be able to cope. I'm barely sleeping, my disordered eating is through the roof with stress and I just want to cry all the time. I am nearly 23 years old and just feel pathetic at not being able to do anything! I have had plenty of part time jobs which I've enjoyed but this is the first time I will have had a 'proper' full time office type job combined with moving away from home.

I cant bring myself to sign the contract or even reply to my managers email which is going to make her think poorly of me before I even start but I just want the whole thing to go away

not really sure what the purpose of this thread is I just needed to vent.
Any advice or personal experiences would be helpful I guess

Hi,
Am sorry to hear that you going through such a tough time. First and foremost I think you should talk to family members if you haven't already. Family can be a supporting block in such a situation. Secondly, You can talk to someone at the university. Universities usually provide support services and they can be of great help to you during this trying time. You can also talk to your manager at your placement. This will enable you to have a good work atmosphere.

I hope all goes well for you

regards,
Isaac

What sort of treatment are you getting for your anxiety and depression?

What sort of support are you getting for your ED?

How long has the managers email been there?

Have you talked to the person in charge of placements?

Did you interview for the placement?

It may be possible to get it under control. You need to talk to people now and see if its possible before taking the drastic step of cancelling. If youve done a part time job then at least you show you can manage t part time. Fear and anxiety are based on things that are unlikely to happen, but if you want to start overcoming it then you have to push your limits and then its not so bad the next day.
