Applying to one than more course at CSM

I will be applying to Central Saint Martins this year for my BA (2020 entry). I would like to study fashion design and see myself designing mainly womenswear in the future.
CSM offers a few courses in that subject which slightly differ between each other Fashion Design Womenswear, Fashion Design with Marketing, and Fashion Design with Knitwear.
I thought that one gets to choose their specialisation after getting admitted, but it doesn't seem to be the case. I just noticed that all of them have different course codes and you can add more than one to your UCAS.
So, I’m wondering whether it’s a good idea to add two or more of them. Does it significantly increase your chance of getting accepted to CSM or is it better to use those spots for similar courses at other fashion schools?

better to use the spots for other universities, if csm want you and they cant offer you a place on one course then they might offer you the other anyway.

Hi! I applied for Fashion Women's wear at CSM and Fashion Print also at CSM along with an LCF and Westminster equivalent. At Central St Martins open days applying to multiple fashion courses is discussed, they suggest that if you feel you suit more than one course ie with marketing or womenswear to apply for them both/all 3 through UCAS. The university isn't allowed to talk between courses so they won't be able to know if you apply for multiple or discus between fashion pathways, so you could actually end up with multiple csm offers. I heard within 2 weeks of the online portfolio hand in that I had been rejected from Women's wear, it's very much about silhouette which doesn't excite me as much as colour, fabric and pattern which is likely why I didn't qualify for that course, But I am so glad I applied to both courses as I got in to Fashion print and I'm still going to do womenswear in this pathway they likely saw more potential in me for this course, so without applying to more than one course I might have not even got in at all! In my opinion you should apply for more than one, just really critique and analyse your strengths because an understanding of what makes your perspective important and individual will help you choose the right pathway and will come across to the heads of that course.

Good luck! I've added some extra info I would have appreciated knowing about the process when you start to go through it

It took about a month to hear after my first rejection that I had an interview for print, they give a month to prepare a full Portfolio and provide a date for interview. My course interviewed 24 UK based students for 4 UK student spots (the other 20 are reserved for international students) which I received one of which is similar in size to the With Knit pathway and with marketing. Whereas, my friend got on to the Fashion with women wear, they interview 90 UK students for 18-ish possible slots as the course is bigger due to popularity. Usually 20-25% of the course is available for a home student.
Csm aren't known for doing this they expect you to have an understanding of what pathway you should take so I wouldn't count on this. LCF however rejected my womenswear application and asked me to interview for printed textiles instead. Definitely depends on the Uni

Hi there!

You're more than welcome to apply for multiple courses within UAL, regardless of which college, if that's what you really want! However, you don't get a higher chance of getting into CSM by applying for multiple courses within the college as each course is treated independently. Once interviewed, UAL/CSM can also offer you a place on other courses within the university that they think would be better suited on your practice.

I would suggest focusing on the course rather than the college. Check if the modules and their way of work is exactly something you're interested in. Look into the degree shows (both past and present) and the current/former students work; see if its the kind of work you imagine yourself making in the near future. If it is, then apply for them because they should be a good fit for you (whether it's in CSM, another UAL college or not). It has to be right for you!

Also, it's worth remembering Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion (our other sister college, all under UAL), are equally good and have their own specialisms. CSM is not the be-all, end-all!

If you have any other questions, let me know! More than happy to help!

All the Best,
Charlene
