So I have all of the symptoms of depression and have booked an appointment at the GP.

However my mother is tellin me that it will be on my records if i'm reffered to a specialist and that it's something everyone goes thru so I should just pray. ( I'm a muslim girl)

So now ima kinda scared and rethinking if I should go. But I really need to this is getting out of hand and i've tried everything other then going to the doctors and nothing is working.

They ve no right to see your medical records without your consent. It seems your mum is ignorant to mental health difficulties , you need to look after your own health regardless of what she thinks.

My main issue with Asian families. It's more of a cultural thing than a Muslim thing. A lot of our elders believe that Praying will cure all illnesses. It's like me praying and believing I'll be teleported to the Sun and back.

I'm not saying, God doesn't exist as many do believe in a higher power. My issue is that even in Islam, muslims do believe that God will only give one a cure, if they take that medicine. In a similar sense, one such as yourself should take treatment.

Now as regards, to employment etc. No this should not affect your work whatsoever. Only in severe cases, it may affect it slightly.

Yeah I agree .. it's annoying but it's going to take time until these idealisations of mental health ware away ... Anyhow, how would it affect it in severe cases ?

I spent 6 months as an inpatient in a psychiatric ward for mental health problems and it hasn't affected me getting a job. Never told any company i've ever worked for and why should I? It's none of their business and I have thankfully got better since those dark days.

Yeah just “pray” that your MENTAL ILLNESS gets treated bg a God that may or not may not exist and hope for the best instead of going to a professional who’s done a degree to help you get treated with actual tools.

You need to educate your mum. Your employer or university can’t see your medical records without consent. Doctors don’t just go around handing out confidential information.

No in fact it could have the opposite effect. It will help your mental health improve and therefore your success at university and employment might improve too. Going to the GP will not have a negative outcome, I do not understand your mother's logic.

The only time an employer would see your medical records is if you're applying to join the armed forces.
