How about r = a[1 + 2cos(theta)]?

The Heinemann Book won't get you far on that with its silly position on values of r < 0 !
it just isnt defined for r is negative (ie between theta = 2 Pi / 3 and theta = 4 Pi/3 there is simply no line). At least this is the way i have learnt it...as there are different definitions on difference syllabusses there may be some courses which say differently.
