Hi, I'm going straight into 3rd year at Strathclyde doing History and Politics and I was wondering what roughly to expect with the lectures. Such as if a lot of the material is provided online, i.e powerpoints or do you just have to take everything down in the lecture. I understand it would be different with different lecturers between modules but just to roughly get someone's experience in either or both subjects. I've only done college up till now so I don't have any uni experience, which is going to be a struggle, so I'd appreciate some tips. Thank You

Hi curiocookie,

For History classes you would have two lectures per module and two tutorials per module and this would be similar for the Politics part of your degree. Fourth year is a bit different as your dissertation counts for a large part of your overall grade. It all depends if you want to write your dissertation in History or Politics. For History you would have two classes each semester then a specialist class that runs both semesters, with the final exam based on everything you have covered over both semesters. The specialist class is on a weekly basis and lasts for two to three hours.

Re your question about lectures, there are typical lectures where you sit through a talk with slides etc. and then you have a tutorial after to discuss the lecture. I would recommend preparing your lectures in advance but you'll know what to expect as it all depends on the modules you choose and the lecturer. It'll be a bit more intense than college and you should be prepared for longer hours of study. Some days you may only be in for one class and other days you could be in the full day but I'd recommend going to the library in between classes if you've got long breaks.

If you have any other questions then ask away!
