Hey XxInsingeXX,

I would absolutely go to a few open days and really get a feel for what the different universities offer!

Regarding the question of what do you do in Civil Engineering here is our course page for it: https://www.swansea.ac.uk/undergradu...ineering-h200/

I've emailed the College of Engineering to see if they have any advice for you of things to do over the summer but getting work experience to do with the degree you're interested in is always great and really helps with employability after uni.

Let me know if you want to know anything else!

Beth

Hey XxInsingeXX,

So the Engineering department got back to me with the following advice:

My advice to the student would be to try and get some work experience in a local civil engineering firm so she can get a feel for what the subject is like. I know that our course is quite practical with designing and building structures, making concrete and being out in the field surveying. I am sure there are aspects of civil engineering that are office-based especially when you progress with your career but on the whole, I believe that civil engineering, especially in the early days of a career, does have practical elements.

Hope that helps!

Hi XxInsingeXX,

I would definitely suggest going to Open Days (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/...pen-days/book/) if you can, but if not, that's fine. You can get a lot of information about a university from their website. At Newcastle University, if you can't make an Open Day, you can also book to attend a student-led campus tour (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/...s-fairs/tours/) or have a virtual tour of the campus and city (https://www.ncl.ac.uk/tour/).

To improve your CV, I would suggest doing a few weeks of work experience, if this option isn't available to you, you can contact a local company and ask to shadow one of their employees for a day or a few days.

I studied Civil Engineering at Newcastle University and am also not a very hands-on person. In Civil, there is a lot of design work that has to be done, a lot of calculations and a lot of report-writing. This is mostly what you will be doing throughout the degree (especially in the later years) and once you start working. You will go on site often during the course and may go on site often afterwards depending on the job that you get, but you won't be doing any of the drilling etc - here's a link to the course details: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/undergraduate/...#coursedetails

If you have any more questions, please let me know!
