No internship...can I get a grad scheme?

I tried applying for various summer internships way back starting in September, yet the only one that I managed to secure was in teaching

Whilst my time teaching was great, I'm not too sure how much I am set on going into it as my career straight after uni - I'm more considering one in consultancy/insurance/marketing/general business.

My Q is therefore whether any people out there who have graduated and gone into the big world of work have any advice about what I can be doing this summer to boost my chances of successfully applying for grad schemes in industries that I don't have experience in?

I study geography and got a first this year so I feel I could do a good application, just not too sure how much of a chance I stand against people with a meaty 12 weeks of office experience under their belt.
