It depends on the employer. Some will, others won't. Regardless, thank you emails are great.

Not always.

I wouldn't worry at all if they don't.

I don't know.

...but there's no harm in sending one

Usually not. The conversation has to stop somewhere.

The interview
Usually, you wouldn't contact employers after the interview as it could be seen as an attempt to influence them after the interview, or gain an unfair advantage. That's quite a strict interpretation, and lots of people wouldn't take it that way, but it would be unwise of an employer to get into further conversation with a candidate between the interview and a decision.

It would be seen by employers as unusual to receive a thank you communication and you run the risk of irritating, of seeking influence, appearing childish or of not understanding the process.

Does someone who thanks companies expect thanks for the thanks? Where is it expected to end?

The interview
As has been said, it's not usual to thank a company for an interview. It's a business, they will see quite a few people, so it's nothing special for them to offer interviews. Also, whilst this may sound harsh, some places have quotas, so will offer interviews to weaker applicants to make up the numbers so they can say "we interviewed 10 people, as per our HR regs"; you don't know where you were in the pecking order. Don't contact them.

I think this is more normal in America, which is perhaps where the idea has come from, but even there it won't make much difference to your candidacy. I expect, like many American things, it will become more common over here. For the vast majority of jobs, it won't make any difference, but there might be one or two where the employer would see it as a nice touch, and a few where the employer would be annoyed by it.

Most employers won't respond if they receive one, unless perhaps you've included further questions or relevant information.
