There's no point in addressing the Trumpophobe machinery, I'll share this with you: Trump is stirring up trouble within the Democratic party and splitting them on the way to the election, we can see the fracture lines and tensions between Pelosi and the rest of the riff-raff. He's making them look like the face of the Democrats, hoping the american electorate will see them as a bunch of demented people who hate their own country. He's cleverer than all the Trumpohobes on TSR put together, even if that is nothing much to brag about.

I think his original Tweets are not simply that people of colour should return to their country of birth/ancestry. However a lot of media outlets -- as it's a simpler story -- claim that it is.

It is qualified. If you don't like how America does business, then you can return to these countries. It is a point of rhetoric designed to prove a point; they would not go back because America is such a great and liberal country. This is not calling for POC to return to the country of origin per se.

I don't see the logic in this comment, though. They are elected representatives who are there to help decide how America does business. If we just accepted the status quo and any complaint meant we emigrated to a country which more agrees with us, nothing politically would ever happen.

The only reason he said it in this case was because these people were people of colour, so there is definitely a deliberate negative racial association which makes the comment intentionally racist. But let's not pretend he was simply saying POC should "go back".
His tweets were specifically directed at 4 people - AOC, Rashid Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley. Of those, only Ilhan Omar was born outside of the USA. When he starts saying that people who are American by birth should "go back to their country if they dislike America", it is incredibly obvious to everyone that what he is saying is that POC cannot actually be American - which is white nationalist rhetoric.

After all, let's consider AOC - She was born in New York, as was her father - he was born in New York from a Puerto Rican family. Trump was born in New York to a father born in New York from German immigrants. She and her family have been in the USA for as many generations as Donald has. Would he apply the same logic to himself when he started banging on about MAGA? Should he have gone back to Germany and would his supporters have backed such a suggestion? No, why - because he and his family are white, and that's all his supporters care about.

Stopped reading when I realised what you were saying was irrelevant.
What I'm saying is that his tweets are very much "POC should go back". By talking about them going back to their own countries when, with the exception of Ilhan Omar, all are at least 2nd generation immigrants (he's 3rd generation), what he is saying is that POC can never really be American (since he doesn't apply the same standards to himself) - he is advancing white nationalism.

You think very much to the effect that POC should "go back", but let's not pretend that he actually said this.

Yes, Trump is a bad man and we don't like him and he has followers who are racist and he has funny hair; but in this instance he was not expressly saying, as some have claimed, that POC should return to their country of origin/ancestry. It was a rhetorical device designed to tell those people not to complain about America.

The people attacking him are the people that wouldn't ever vote for him anyway. Doubt he loses any votes at all because of this. Wouldn't be surprised if he became more popular.

He maybe alienates some central floating voters with the distasteful chants. Don't know how much weight being called a racist holds these days and Trump is rolling back towards a "let them leave" message instead. That'll reduce the amount of voters he loses.

The main result of the episode is getting the Dems to gather around and support "the squad". Making the likes of AOC and Omar front and centre of the party can only be good for Trump. That's what he gains from the whole thing.

Honestly cannot even believe this. "go back to your own country" is the oldest trope used by racists smh..and people are actually dismissing it. You can support him all you want but still recognise that this is clear racism

Anyone still doubt that Trump is whistling to and supporting white nationalists?
Nothing to do with skin colour therefore nothing to do with white nationalism. Stop crying wolf.

********. The gang he's going at (Omar, Pressley, Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib) are all women of colour. He's swinging at them with well known racist rhetoric (go back to your own country) when they are American - all have american citizenship, and with the exception of Ilhan Omar, their families have been in America for as many generations as Trumps. He complains that they should go back to their own country (despite America being their own country - already about race) if they think America needs changing, but didn't once talk about going back to Germany himself when he thought America needed changing. What's the difference when he and they are US citizens by birth? Race again. Anyone denying that his remarks were about race are lying to themselves, and embarrassing themselves in the process.

Ok. But we're talking about ilhan or whatever her name is. And in this case, it's not racist. It's patriotism, which some might call nationalism. But it's not racist. Don't act like USA and Islam don't have issues with each other....and trump also has stated that Somalia is one of the main countries that terrorists come from, and ilhan is Somalian. So it's about the USA and national security. NOT race. If she was white Muslim, it WOULDNT. BE. RACIST. It's not even about her being Muslim though, it's about her being from a highly dangerous country?????? Jesus Christ! Lefties keep screaming racist which is unfair to actual racism! It's like feminists crying rape! Stop it!

Ironically, you're the one who's bringing Islam into this where no one else has.

You just brought rape into this? Really?

Yeah it’s not like America isn’t dangerous - it’s not like there’s been 250 mass shootings there this year alone.

Exactly. Because people are throwing around the wrong word. If you read the OP the woman is Muslim from Somalia??? So the word here isn't RACIST. Muslim isn't a RACE. So no one is RACIST. no one else has mentioned her religion because they're caught in the hysteria of crying wolf that someone is racist, when they clearly haven't read the article.
