You need to be business standard for it to make a difference professionally. As Mandarin is harder to learn in terms of finding the resources in the West, to learn to a higher standard, outside the school/uni system, I'd advise choosing that. It's also rarer, from a European perspective. German would be much easier to pick up as you go along, without formal training.
