Of those who have ran in a leadership contest during my lifetime I would say that Lord William Hague and David Miliband are probably the most apt. Michael Gove May in future be remembered in such a context if he can achieve a great office.

Though I am a conservative, I would like to throw "Red" Ken Livingstone in to the mix.
He did a great job as mayor of London, way better than BoJo and Lets face it Sadiq Khan is just a complete joke.
If you can run the capital well then running the country wouldn't be all that tougher.
