My friend doing Japanese at Leeds mentioned that you could vaguely suggest where you wished to study in your year abroad in Japan, however the final allocation was due to Leeds and the Nihon college working together. Depending on your year one results, you were allocated towards Tokyo if you scored lower marks, those scoring higher were placed outside of the current capital. There was no ‘formal’ entrance exam , but just this ‘threshold’ system, apparently (unless I got everything wrong), there was quite a bit of form - filling and documentation to amass, and a healthy bank balance of around £10k which needed to be shown for a visa.
Durham will certainly have their own reliable way of doing things.
