You typically just know. I know my fiance loves me because he's willing to be 5000 miles away for most of the year, willing to drive 200 miles to pick me up, put up with my annoying habits, shows me affection, encourages me to come out of my comfort zone, supports me, understands me, respects me etc. He wouldn't do most of those things if he only liked me a bit.
