Yeah if you really wanted to play football he would accept he obvious fact that he's got more than enough money (you could live on the interest) so he could take a wage cut and go and play for somebody else, but the fire's obviously gone.
I don't think Bale is a purist who plays football for the sake of playing football.

Let's not forget that he's 31 now so actually he's had a pretty full career of playing football (being star man for Spurs / big move to Real Madrid / won plenty of trophies at Real Madrid).

He did actually agree a move to China last summer (and the Chinese club agreed to buy) and Real Madrid initially agreed to let him go. Real Madrid changed their mind last minute and demanded a transfer fee which ruined the transfer. Why should Bale now bend over to help Real Madrid?

Let's not forget that it was Real Madrid's choice to offer Bale a 6 year contract at 600k a week in 2016.

Is this the first time he's publically said he wants to leave? Since last summer he's been saying he has a contract.

he doesn't actually say he wants to leave.
He says he wants to play football, location is "in the hands" of RM

Well Zidane has been very clear for a while that Bale is not in his plans.

Anyway Bale is obviously trying to get a move away now. I wonder if this is to alert other clubs that he is available or publically notify RM that he wants to leave or if RM will see it as a sign of weakness from Bale and their stance will harden in terms of either getting a fee / not paying all of Bale's wages.

As for me, Gareth is a very good footballer, I hope he will show his former level in England and wipe Perez's nose.
