Glasgow or Northumbria for MSc Psychology (Conversion)?

First post here so apologies if this has already been mentioned. I have received an unconditional offer from both universities and I really cant decide which one to choose. I know the obvious choice is Glasgow but I am concerned about the course being offered by the school of education along with the fact that most tutors' research areas are too neuroscience focused. I am leaning towards Northumbria since student satisfaction for the conversion course also seems to be higher compared to Glasgow, but I would like to hear your thoughts and especially from people who have already attended either of those two.

Hi,

I don’t know about psychology so if you feel that’s extremely relevant here then take below as you wish.

Are you talking about the respected UofG? If so hands down pick there. Student satisfaction means nothing honestly it’s a survey done at the end of the course 25% bother to do it and it takes 5 mins.

Look at league tables for student satisfaction and have a laugh, see how low Cambridge is compared to Hull or similar.

Pick Glasgow there’s absolutely no contest and you’d really be making a mistake in my opinion.

Who cares which School provides the degree? Student satisfaction is a useless metric to judge universities by - all a Uni has to do is give students something free/promote a popular academic/promise an easier exam process etc a week before the questionnaire and the satisfaction score increases. Most students at Northumbria are just happy a university gave them a place! Glasgow, hands down.

Thank you both!
Hi Zilean,I wonder if you can share an update on this. Did you choose Glasgow?I’m in the exact same position a year later; but my big question is around price. Northumbria is half the price - and most modules seem similar except for an extra half a year of optional courses at Glasgow? I fully believe education requires investment but one would make life a whole lot easier. Would love to hear your opinions
Northumbria is a joke. I've been to a few different high education facilities, this was hands down the worst school of my life.

I can't speak on behalf of this person but I currently study Psychology at Northumbria and it is not a bad university at all in my opinion.

The professors are great and should I have any questions they are always answered respectfully and effectively! The University uses a VLE known as Blackboard which has "discussion boards" whereby any questions that are general can be posted so advice and information is accessible to everyone and should you wish to be anonymous you can email your professor privately and ask them to post it anonymously for you.

The quality of education is at the bare minimum Good, again, in my opinion, and I feel as though I am very informed on the topics the course provides! I am achieving 68%+ in my second year And am getting closer to a first with every assessment I take. Similarly, feedback for the module results is usually posted and allows you to see where you are in comparison to everyone else and most people are earning 2:1s and 1sts!

The only time I have ever had an issue with the uni was an internal problem when I switched courses! I joined on the Psychology with Criminology course and realised I did not mean to do that course around 2 days into it, so I switched which I had no issues with! But I was not informed my student card would need to be replaced because of this switch and one of my module tutors was not informed I had switch classes, but I managed to sort it out pretty quickly, so it isn't that big of an issue.

Having said that, as much as I have enjoyed my time at Northumbria, I do not plan on gaining a Masters from this uni. My only reasons are: their entry requirements are relatively low and since I am hoping to eventually attain a DClinPsy, I would prefer to go to a university that is less "lax" in entry requirements; I also do not think the Masters in clinical psychology looks as interesting as other universities. I also believe I have more capabilities and thus could go to a better university, which in turn looks better on my CV/future university applications!

This was very helpful. Where did you decide to go for your Master, if I may ask? Thx
