Abscessed Tooth

Ok guys, I need some help / advice.
I've been having a lot of private dental work. I've had a root canal which has a temporary filling in it. It's been fine for weeks and I've had other appointments while having other work done and my dentist said the tooth was settled and I wouldn't need a permanent filling in it for a while.
Friday night I was in excruciating pain and on Saturday I ended up paying 150pound to visit an emergency dentist. She did an x-ray and there was infection at the bottom of the root. She flushed out the tooth, packed it with some medicated paste and gave me amoxicillin.
I am now in more pain than before I visited the dentist. Is this normal? Ive read online that the antibiotics are slow to work.
My face is sore and swollen, I have pain radiating across the side of my face and concentrated throbbing from the tooth. I can barely sleep or eat and have no energy to leave bed.
I'm taking pain killers every 4 hours and they aren't helping neither is orajel.
What can I do to relieve the pain?
