Have you thought about ringing the unis concerned and asking them? Start with Swansea. I cant see why having a masters gets you a guaranteed interview, so maybe go to the person who told you this and ask them what it is based on.

Why would it guarantee you an interview? When you apply for anything (not just GEM), nothing can be labelled as guaranteed, as so many factors are at play.

GEM is ridiculously competitive, so I would imagine that at the bare minimum any university would expect you to have a highly relevant first degree at first class level. If you do a master's degree, it would also need to very relevant to medicine; however, it wouldn't necessarily make up for an irrelevant or low first degree or boast you to the top of their list.

I have a very irrelevant 2.1 degree and received 3 offers for GEM this year so I’m not sure the above is true!

I don’t know of anywhere where a Masters guarantees you an interview - for most GEM programmes as long as you meet the minimum academic requirements the cut off for interview is then just based on UKCAT/GAMSAT score.

Thank you for your response, I was wondering what score did you get for your GAMSAT/UCAT in order to be given an offer.

No, a masters does not guarantee you an interview for medicine at any medical school

I am considering GEM and I asked my tutor at university about whether I should do a master’s she said it doesn’t give you and advantage over anyone else.

The scores for interview vary from year to year, but are often in a similar ballpark. The university pages on entry requirements usually include what these are.

For some places a Master's will put you at a very slight advantage, but not many (for example Warwick will consider Master's students with a lower UKCAT score than those with just an undergraduate degree). I wouldn't do one if you already have a 1st or 2.1. I did a Masters for GEM but that's because I only had a 2.2 from my first degree and it was more of a necessity for me. They will not guarantee you an interview, this will be based on entrance exam result, work experience and potentially other factors.

I couldn't have said it better myself!

@nav5678, this is essentially how things work with us, but with GAMSAT instead of UKCAT. We require an undergraduate degree of 2:1 or above to be considered for the course, but we can drop that to 2:2 with a Master's level qualification alongside it. If you already have the undergraduate grade needed among everything else, then while it may give you an edge to further your education before applying for GEM it will not get you a guaranteed interview.

We do offer some students guaranteed interviews, but those are for students who take an undergraduate degree with us from our Pathways to Medicine selection and meet the minimum requirements.

I hope that helps.

Hi,
Does the masters degree have to be relevant to Medicine?

Hi @adiittii, I hope you're doing well. Thanks for getting in touch.

You can check our course pages for more info on Graduate Entry Medicine requirements at Swansea Uni https://www.swansea.ac.uk/undergraduate/courses/medicine/medicine-graduate-entry-mbbch/.

As part of the application, we will consider a Master's degree in any subject alongside a 2:2 undergraduate degree.

You can also chat with current GEM students via our UniBuddy platform here https://www.swansea.ac.uk/study/student-life/chat-to-our-students/unibuddy/.

If you need any further information, get in touch any time. Best wishes, Gethin (Future Students Team).
