So my brother will start olevel this year and he's confused as to which subjects to chose. He's familiar with sciences obvi but since there are new subjects to chose from like business , accounting and commerce, he doesn't really know if he'll enjoy them. How can I help? I've taken sciences so I'm not familiar with the other courses. Also, he doesn't quite have a career in mind.

Make a table

1. What subjects are offered?
2. Which ones are compulsory?
3. Which ones does he hate and is poor at
4. Which ones does he like, find interesting and enjoy.
5. Are there any rules such as take one language and one science etc.
6. Does he intend to take any at A level?
7. I think GCSE is mostly about fitting the criteria above , getting as many high grades as you can and not cutting off options for A level.

Get your brother to do the above and come back with your list of definite no.
Definite yes because he wants or needs them.
Definite compulsory.
Remaining choices and how many he has to choose.
Id which ones he is best at and can get the best grades with least effort.

No career in mind then keep options open and take a balanced selection and if possible enough traditional subjects to keep open the chance of doing them at A level.

Do the above and he should have a better idea of making a sensible choice.
He should be honest in what grades he might get.

See how you get on.

At our the school, 6 subjects are compulsory. Now the other three he's confused about.
The selection is:
Phy, chem and bio
Phy Chem accounting
Acc business commerce

As accounting, business and commerce are new to him, he doesn't know as to what he should go with.

Which can he get the best grades at with least effort?
Does he dislike or is weak with any of those?

All things being equal I would take Phy, Bio, Chem.
