I think it's competitive to be a top lawyer working in a good firm, but that sort of competition exists in all careers.

Is it very competitive to be a lawyer?
depends what type of lawyer, what type of law etc....

Legal jobs are very competitive, way more graduate with LLB's than jobs.

This leads to an elite groups of solicitors, barristers & in-house attorneys, then there are some lawyers who are middle of the road.

And some who are bottom feeders who take what jobs they can get such as personal injury.

Many law grads never even have a career as a lawyer

How long is a piece of string?

It depends on your educational background, uni grades, work experience, etc. It also depends on the firms or chambers to which you're applying, and on which other sectors you're comparing it to.

Adding to what has already been said, it does also depend what you mean by 'lawyer'. Primarily that would mean either a solicitor or a barrister, but those are different career paths with different levels of competition depending on the specifics of what you want to do.

Whilst I have my own issues with the personal injury industry, there are still plenty of excellent lawyers who practise at all levels personal injury litigation. Just because a certain view of personal injury lawyers has developed in the public domain, it doesn't mean that that view is accurate.

Yea it was probably a bad example, only trying to make the point about the competitiveness.

Hence there are a wide scope of lawyers and those who don't make the cut at the more competitive job levels feed on what roles they can find elsewhere in the system.
