NH-(CH2)4

vs

CH3CH=CHCH3

They both have 2 right?

the 1st one is cylic... my MS agrees that the 2nd one has 2 peaks.

It asks which has the least peaks, and i don't see how the 1st one couldn't be an answer too as it has 2 peaks NH and CH2 right? or does the cyclic nature come into play?

Thanks

The 1st one has more, it has 3.

If you draw it out, a pentagon with the NH at the top you can see that the Ch2's at the bottom of the pentagon are in the same env, same with the 2 at the top and then you have the H on the N.

but i thought CH2's count as one environment

Nope, the CH2s at the bottom of the ring are seperated from the NH, by another group (CH2) so these will be in a slightly different environment to the two CH2s at the top of the ring next to the NH. This happens cus the NH group will interact with the CH2 next to it more than the CH2s which are further away from it, and so cause a slightly larger shift.

Just think of it as though the NH is some kind of magnet,

The ch2's at the top are most attracted to it as they are closer.
The ones at the bottom are shielded from it by the ch2's at the top and so are not as attracted.
