why do discussions get closed?

can you close them yourself if you started one?

there is not really much i know about this site.

You cant close them yourself, you can request it to be closed if you ask the community team nicely but unless it is rule breaking they are under no obligation to close it.
Aside from rule breaking threads get closed if they are years old and have suddenly been 'bumped' (posted in) recently.
If you want to ask why a particular thread of your own was closed you would need to do this in ATCS (ask the community staff)
