My compulsory GCSE's were English Lit & Lang, Double Science award, Maths, R.E. I had to choose one technology, one language and two free choices - I chose Art and ICT. ICT was compulsory as a short course but I decided to do it full course.

English (people in top sets were meant to do Lit after school, but I thought GNVQ ICT was more important)
Double Science
Maths
Intergrated Humanities or RE
We had 4 other options. If we wanted to do Spanish, we had to do French as well.

Our compulsory ones were: maths, science (double), english (lit and lang), r.e and citizenship

We had to choose a vocational GCSE in year 8, which we started in year 9 (business, travel/leisure & tourism, or health & social care) and then we got to choose 3 ourselves

1)why did darwin's theory of evolution only gradually get accepted?

2)why are scientists not sure how life began on earth?

3)why are there so many differences in theories e.g. lamarck's theory and darwin's?

i have some clues but there's plent of cleverer people like you guys out there>

eng lit & lang
maths & stats for top set
science- you get a choice of triple or additional
citizenship (half)
Philosophy & ethics (half OR full)
A technology (graphics, food, textiles, electronics)

Then you can choose three from art, music, geography, history, drama, double art, french, german, spanish and PE. And FSMQ additional maths is extra if they invite you try it out...

Compulsory subjects at my school were:

English (and english literature for the top sets)
Maths (and statistics for the top sets, also free standing maths qualification for set 1)
Science - either the double award or applied science.
RE - short course, but top set is made to do long course...

Citizenship+Pe also but I doubt you'll count those as there is no qualification involved.

We get to chose the remaining 3 subjects.

Compulsory:
English & Lit
Maths & Stats or Maths AS (you don't get to choose which one)
Additional science
short course citizenship
short course RE
ICT (If you don't choose the AS as one of your options)

Then, there are 4 option blocks for you to choose from, and you have to take one language and then the other 3 are whatever you want. Foy my year, the blocks were:

1) German vs. AS ICT
2)History vs. French vs. Art
3)Geography vs. French vs. Tech
4) Separate science vs. History

In answer to your Qs:

1. Because the church (powerful in those days) opposed his views so people were reluctant to accept them.

2. Because no one was there to witness  sorry.

3. No idea, sorry.

we have to do:
english lang
english lit
short course r.e
short course i.t
maths
double science (although people that got level 7 in sats can take triple but we do it in the same amount of time as double)

and then choose 4 options. and this can be any, we dont have to take a language or a humanity or anything. Someone i know did drama, art, music and performing arts!! (but she was advised to not take so many arts)

We had to do GCSE English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Religious Studies. Then we had to choose:

1 Language Subject - French, Spanish, German or Irish
1 Society Subject - Business Studies, History, Geography or Home Economics
1 Science Option - Single Award, Double Award or Triple Award

And then depending on the Science Option chosen we could choose 0, 1 or 2 more subjects either from the Languages, the Societies or a fourth box which consisted of - Art, ICT, T&D, Drama, Music and PE.

9 subjects had to be chosen via this system (a 10th GCSE in Music or Additional Maths could be chosen also however).
