I've been getting pains in my kidneys at times (I think it's my kidneys - lower back at both sides)

Someone mentioned it might be dehydration, but I do drink quite a lot of fluid every day. I know someone who had kidney stones but it doesn't seem to be painful enough or frequent enough for that.

Any ideas? Does anything else cause pain around that sort of area?

Lower back muscles, nerves, hips, pelvic joints, periods, bladder etc... loads of things can cause lower back pain.
