I've only just started styling my hair for the first time and have spent a fair bit of money on various products but none seem to hold for me.. I have fairly short but thick hair and just want a messy look on the front.

A lot of the products give me a style that looks okay but like I said none hold.. The product that gives me the best style is the VO5 Matt Clay but the hold is crap (only lasts about 10 seconds literally) so looking for a similar product with a great hold..

Any advice?

Thanks!

So do you just use hair spray on its own or as a finishing product? Which one?

Also, does anyone know hair spray has a bad effect on hair?

Does it?

Um mostly I use it on its own, but if you feel that you can get the style you want with the products you use atm then just use it as a finishing product to hold it all in place.

I find KMS Styling Paste the best. It costs quite a bit(£20) for one tube but lasts a long time, and considering I have ultra thick hair, its doing quite well.

Use matt paste such as tony and guy matt paste for men. Or texturizing gum might do te trick for you, however her is a top tip, do your hairstyle then imeadiatly spray with shockwave ultra strong hairsrpay. Not too much though just a whizz all over. and then quickly get the blowdryer on a light setting to gently but quickly free the hairspray in place immeadiatly.

I use label.m matt paste (Toni & Guy) and sometimes Ted Baker Moulding Cream and they both seem to do the job well enough.

Pfft. Go back to not styling it. Seems to much effort for too little noticement in my opinion.

I use VO5 texturising gum, and find it holds really well, much better than the matt clay!

£3 in Boots, often BOGOF as well

Nooooooooo, I used to use fudge, I thought it was great but it is terrible in comparison to the VO5 stuff - all the hairdressing salons in the area have changed from Fudge to other brands because they were getting complaints of a downturn in quality, which is why I stopped using it... (I know a few people in the business)

the matt clay seems to have gone downhill recently.
I started using it like 2 years ago and it gave great hold all day, but now it just makes my hair feel greasy.
I've started using Fructis Surf Hair, which gives a good stiff hold for shorter hair and lets you mess it up, but it's a lot more difficult to style it the way you want it to, it really is just a mess once you use it

American Crew - Fibre
L'oreal Professionnel pour Homme - Definition wax

I've tried fudge and i hated the stuff, way to greasy. Seriously the above hold really well, feel really light and best of all give a matte look. A little pricy though, but they last.

Dirty trix matrix matte clay.

But get your hair cut from a salon where they'll cut it while thining it. This makes it MUCH easier to style and looks better.

My hairs abit longer than in my prof pic now, so I've started using Label M Sea Salt spray abit if I straighten it. Use VO5 Fibre putty all the time, then bash some hairspray on after if you really don't want it to move. But that's me.

American crew fibre. They've got other stuff too. Much nicer than V05 imo.
