Just found out I'm going to Cardiff, super excited!! I'm doing History, and I was wondering if the first year counts towards the final degree mark? I've heard some unis don't count the first year so that students can get into the work without worrying too much about the grades -- is that true for Cardiff?

First year in every degree in every university does not count towards your overall marking. You still have to get at least 40% in your first year to be able to go onto the second year so its not as though you can just sit back and do nothing. Second year is usually harder than the first year so if you take it too easy in the first year you will have a reality check in the second year. Plus what you learn in the first year may come up in exams in the second year.
