So, I posted this response in another thread, but I still think it stands for what you are looking for:

I've seen a lot of students use the "HP Pavilion 14" laptop.

Its price range I believe is £350 - £450 (decent deal for a University student)

CPU: Intel Core i5-6200U

GPU: Intel HD Graphics 520

Display: 14.0", WXGA (1366 x 768), TN

Storage: 1000GB HDD

RAM: 12GB DDR4

Weight: 1.49 kg (3.3 lbs)

I use that laptop currently and might just take it to uni hopefully after what you just said about lots of pupils using it

Oh really? What a coincidence .

If you have it at the moment, I would recommend taking it; certainly saves you money in the long-run so you can focus payments for accommodation, food, etc.
If youre commuting, you'll want a lighter/smaller laptop. Look into chromebooks/notebooks, Currys is doing a 'trade in' deal where you can trade your old laptop for a chromebook.
