I’m thinking of doing my EPQ on Margaret Thatcher and her legacy and to what extent was she successful. I’d be interested to hear your opinions, just to give me something to think about. Some argue her radical economic policies reformed society for the better and raised living standards for all. Others say she decimated the north with unemployment and Ken Livingstone went as far to argue that she partially caused the 2008 financial crash with her deregulation of the banks. So, what do you think about Thatcher - success or failure?

I believe that overall she was successful because thanks to her she got on the better side with America (special relationship was restored) I mean even Reagan’s wife described them as “political soulmates” plus during the Falklands war she restored her image (leadership, supremacy etc)

The handling of the miners' strike was key in controlling abusive unions, IMO.

Home ownership and credit cards took off too.

Studied this intensively at a A-level. Personally i think she started with some good ideas but went too far by her third term, this term is where most of her notoriety comes from. If you are planning to do an EPQ on this see if you can borrow the AQA textbook of 'The making of modern britain 1951 - 2007' from somewhere. Whether she was a success or a failure entirely depends on whether you were a yuppie or a miner.

Don't forget to read her three books:
The Downing Street Years
The Path to Power
Statecraft

Thatcher! The Musical in 2007 was wonderful too!!

There are so many books about her now .
And also the foundation site on the net

I remember reading when she died, that one economic historian said that the changes she made or initiated would have happened now anyway, but he said she pushed through, in his opinion 30 yrs of change of the economy and the country , industry closing because of globalisation, in a decade, where as if someone less radical had been PM, say Willie Whitelaw, then change would have been slower. But if you compare us to other G8 countries we have similar economies and levels of industry .

Please PM me if you wish to chat, I have read many books about her, and find her fascinating subject. Not her policies so much, but her personality and how she managed to get to the top, and if you look at the photos of the cabinet in the 80s, she is the only woman. I know many people disliked her, and thought her uncaring, hence David Cameron committing 0.7% of GDP to Dept for International development and overseas aid, as he wished to be seen to care.
But I think you have to look at the 1970s and the mess that Harold, Ted and Jim made of the country with strikes all the time, 26% inflation, no proper leadership, etc, etc.
There is a good book called Britain in the 70s, When the lights went out. by Andy Beckett.
That will help you look at laying the groundwork for what she inherited and how she decided to use a different path to get Britain back on the right path.

Still not sure why she got such props for that... i mean firstly she had already gutted the armed forces and it was sheer dumb luck we had anything to send at all.
Second, beating up a tin pot dictatorship is hardly covering yourself in glory

She was an absolute disaster in real terms for the majority of the country, her policies crippled workers rights, sent the country into recession and she sold off the fruits of past governments to get herself out of the debt. Gave people more personal debt and a created a generally worse society for the next generations.

She was successful in dismantling all the good that was done in the Socialist movement from 1945, she made socialism and tax a dirty word, the result is now welfare, job security, community spirit, pension, NHS, affordable housing and many other things the working classes rely on are in a poor state or considered an outdated concept which needs modernisation

No, I hope that those who believe in reincarnation are correct. I'd love to think of thatcher reincarnated as a white, physically weak male from poor humble origin she falsely claimed to be from.

She could enjoy the suffering she belived in first hand, it would be even more sweet to think of the reincarnated thatchers being taken care of by a butch fellow inmate of HMP or end up in the litteraly on the streets dying living in constant fear of personal safety because of her pervious selves polices.
