I’m writing my personal statement for English literature and I was wondering whether I had to say the name of the writers for the texts I mention e.g. The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood

Ideally yes (although for standard common texts like the handmaid's tale you can often skip it as it would be common knowledge)

Thank you!! Do I have to say their full name or just their surname?
