You apply for accommodation after you get results. I don't know about holding back rooms - they will give priority to disabled/firm offer holders, then any other rooms will be allocated to insurance offer holders. From what my friends tell me their accommodation applications for insurance were pretty much Self-Catered/Catered, En-suite/Non-ensuite and thats about it!

What other options would they have had then, apart from the actual residence? I mean, there can't be many more options! (or can there..)

Well when its your firm offer you can chose the residence. Whereas they had that choice and could ahve ended up in any of those accommodations.
