Honey, we need to talk.
It's about Year 12.
I know, I know, you don't wanna hear it, but it's important.

Hi, I'm Freya, a 17 y/o from Exeter and Year 12 was the biggest f*ck up of my life, quite frankly. Absolute disaster - I wish I could blame it on something but really I just got cocky and complacent and stayed in bed instead of going to 9am history a wee bit too much.

I ended up with:
A in Politics
B in Philosophy
.... and getting pulled out of the History exam last minute to stop me getting a U.
So that's the History at Oxford dream out the window, sorry @ me this time last year.

BUT, y'all know this is going to change.
I'm now doing a 3rd year, so this year I'll be taking A Level Politics and Philosophy, and AS Level Psychology. In 3rd year I'll take A Level Psychology and a fast track A Level. Make sense? Cool.

It sucks, but we'll get over it. On the plus side, it means this year is a year to crack down & sort my life out before applying to uni next year. And really, I need that. I have no clue what I'm doing with my life, so be prepared for endless changes of my plans. I'm thinking of Law, but may well have f*cked that one with last year's results...

Anyway. One week before I'm back, so this is an intensive unf*ck your life week. Join me for the journey and we're gonna get our heads back in the game like Troy Bolton and become as rich and successful and hot as Zac Efron... (that's how it works, right???)

Xoxo, Freya

01/09/2019 - 8 days to go

Day 1 of my Unf*ck Your Life week & 8 days until college... ahhh!

Somehow I've lost all my notes from AS Philosophy... oops. I've been making revision notes today to make up for it - luckily our teacher uploads videos of her going through the powerpoints so if I need it a bit more in depth, I'm sorted! (Does anyone else's teachers do that? My friends in other classes all think it's hilarious/slightly terrifying)

I'm using OneNote for all my notes this year so no more cute highlighted notes, but I think this is pretty darn cute anyway. It's a very boring unit tbh, but at least it's getting me back in the grind of pomodoros...

My checklist of notes to redo (I woke up at 2pm today so it's gonna be an all nighter tonight to reset... a HELLA long study session awaits)
Spoiler:
Show

Philosophy:
Definitions of knowledge
Perception as a source of knowledge
Reason as a source of knowledge
Limits of knowledge
Applied ethics
Meta ethics

Politics:
Parliament
Prime Minister and the Executive
Relations between branches

I've also written out my timetable and allocated when I'm going to do extra study for each subject, and when I'm going to use my frees for socialising. Last year I had exactly the same free periods as my best pal so we always ended up doing nothing and as we have such different subjects we couldn't study together.

I'm being a lot stricter on myself - I'm going in 9-4:30 every day, making sure I actually use my frees instead of having a lie in or going home early. It's gonna be tough but I'm hoping y'all will all keep me accountable! I've also allocated time for progression research - all my friends will be applying to uni this year, but I won't til next, so I want to make sure I'm ahead of the game (watching Eve Cornwell counts as research, right??)

Xoxo, Freya

ok wow. this lasted long but i am HERE. we reaffirming our vows right now, tsr.

half term 1 is over and it's been helllllaaaaa busy. I didn't realise how actually doing my damn work would leave me with so little time to be online but uh.... what are memes anymore? I feel like a grandma.

the overview

this half term has been BRILLIANT. i've been going in at 8:30 most days to meet a pal and study before lesson, and some nights i've been staying until 6:30. my attendance is SO much better (even with my habit of sleeping through 9am psychology). yes the caffeine addiction is back in full swing, but i feel on top of everything and i actually understand the content. but seeing as you've missed out on regular updates, i'll fill you in a bit more in depth now.

psychology
hello AS my old friend. being in a year 12 class again is odd and people definitely think i'm strange for reading ahead/doing extra reading/asking so many questions... oh how they will learn. the teacher has been difficult to get on with but i'm making an active effort to get along with her and it's really paying off!
i'm struggling with the exam format because it's quite different to my other subjects - there's more focus on stating facts whereas most of my other questions are almost pure evaluation! but a C is not bad for a first attempt so i'm sticking at it and adapting the way i make notes to clearly point out what's ao1 and what's ao3.

politics
this year we're studying ideologies and global politics, and it's WAY harder than last year. as last year was all UK stuff i breezed through most of it as i'd already got loads of examples from following the news for 4+ years, but i know absolutely nothing about international politics! so i'm really focusing on extra reading for that and it's nice to slowly piece everything together - reading over my notes this morning, they finally made sense. the ideologies side is admittedly dull but our teacher goes very, very... very very in depth so i'm feeling pretty confident. can't argue with the teaching when i've never got less than a B! i'm averaging A's in the ideologies side and B's in the global, but that isn't surprising and im sure i can pull that up to A's or A*'s in time.

philosophy
philosophy is fascinating this year as we're doing metaphysics of mind (are the mind and body the same thing?) and metaphysics of god. most of my time is going into this as there are just so many opportunities for extra reading and you're encouraged to get as many unique arguments as possible into your essays - the spec content just isn't enough to fill the marks. I got an A on my first essay attempt, and another A on the first 12 marker, so i'm hoping to get this up to an A* as soon as possible. it's definitely my best chance to get an A*.

everything else
thankfully i'm maintaining more of a life outside college this year! i've gone back to model united nations and am loving it, helping to run the college christian union, stepping into leadership at my youth group (and on the christmas party planning team, heck yeahhh), i've got work experience at a national solicitors this coming week (!!!!) and i've got lots of cool opportunities being given to me - i was on national radio this week talking to an MP, i've been invited to do a podcast run by the childrens commissioner, and i'm going to the house of commons in three weeks for the youth parliament debate.

everything is really on the up!! but of course there's still room for improvement, so my goals for the coming half term are...
1. post on here more often! i could really do with accountability
2. incorporate more active recall into my studying
3. start going over first year content
4. sort out my diet so i'm not having constant energy crashes
5. speak up more in class discussions

what went well for you guys this half term? how are you gonna step it up a notch next time? really interested to hear!

xoxo, freya

ps: my anthem for today is shake it by metro station because i am a degenerate who downloaded tik tok last week SORRY

thanks lovely! that's fab, i feel like my college are cracking down so much on study times this year (we all had a lecture from a vice principal the other day saying if we weren't doing 20 hours of revision a week we weren't working hard enough) that they're ignoring the importance of socialising... we'd go mad without it!! its a shame so many unhealthy habits are promoted

gosh that sounds rough. 20 hours sounds ridiculous:laugh: it does really annoy me when schools do stuff like this because it often leads to people pushing themselves too hard and ending up not in a good place mentally
