Heya

I'm Alby and this will be my second GYG attempt. Last year massively failed - I started hibernating around Christmas and still haven't really woken up yet but eh

Surprised myself with my (external) AS Grades (I started revision the night before the exam and did virtually no work during the year) and my predicted grades will probably be one grade higher:

Maths (Edexcel) - A
Biology (Edexcel B) - A
Psychology (AQA) - A (post remark)
Further Maths (Edexcel, doing Decision and Further Decision) - B

I also have AS Levels from my old sixth form (which I miss so so much )
Maths (OCR MEI) - A
Physics (OCR B)- A
Computing (AQA) - B
Further Maths (OCR MEI) - B (still haven't improved two year later)

Aims for the year:
- Get into uni! I want to apply for Biology/Biosciences and am considering Durham, Bath and Glasgow at the moment. Oxford is the dream but it feels so unlikely.

- Try and keep attendance up. My attendance was 70% on the last day of the year (which I was pleasantly surprised with) Probably should trying going in for more than one or two lessons a week. And 9ams, as impossible as they may be.

- Be okay. Mental health has been something I've been struggling with for the past 6 years and I'm finally making progress with treatment (meds and waiting list for therapy). I need to try and make some time for me and actually tell someone when I'm not feeling great.
I'm only allowed to do 4 A Levels this year if my mental health is okay (well more if they think my mental health is okay) so I do have something to work for.

So yeah **shrugs**

I start college on Friday and boy am I not looking forward to it, but here goes!

At the moment it's on the representation of mental illness in Virginia Woolf's 'Mrs Dalloway' and Sylvia Plath's 'The Bell Jar' but it changes every week tbh, anything to enhance that personal statement yano ahah

Honestly mrs dalloway took me about a month to read, woolf's writing style is lovely but it's so damn dense i felt i was wading through adjectives and semi colons half the time
I am indeed! Will try my best to understand all the mathsy bio-y stuff you'll talk about in your blog but I'm pretty damn hopeless at STEM

I'm at the stage of my life where the second I can't easily read (and by read I mean skim read) a book, down it goes - never to be picked up again - I probably should try some of Woolfs' stuff though

Where are you thinking of applying to?

I'll try not to make it too stemy but sometimes nerding out is the way to go🤷🏻
Eh sure that's not true anyway -

The amount of dry classics I’ve had to drag my eyes through purely to slap on my personal statement is unbelievable🙄 but I do love woolf ngl she’s probs my fav

Well I live in Yorkshire so I honestly want to go as far away as possible, so I’m thinking Scotland or somewhere down south, although I’m off Durham and York this month lmao. I like the idea of London but it’s so freaking expensive and I’m toying with oxford but I’ve got no real direction:dontknow: what’s really stressing me out is how they’ve all got A*AA/AAA requirements and it seems really pointless applying for five unis wanting all the same grades://

No sis you nerd off on prokaryotes and osmosis in potatoes and all that good bio stuff and I’ll nod supportively like I know what you’re on about🙃

Poor you

I've read two books for my personal statement and I have 4 more lying around my room waiting to be picked up but 🤷🏻🤷🏻

ooh enjoy them! Both places I'm considering.

As a Londoner, I can tell you London isn't worth it in the slightest 😬😬

Not necessarily - Some places will except you if you do a bit worse - but fair point. Aside from Oxford, I think everywhere I'm considering wants AAB so. may end up with that exact problem.

😂 Osmosis in potatoes suck. Osmosis in animal cells however....

Do you have a GYG?

I mean, at least it's something
Thank you!!
Idk I've always wanted to live in London for a little bit but I guess i wouldn't understand why people would want to come to Leeds either so it works both ways
Yeah, that's true. Thought about applying to some BBB but then realised there'd be no point applying there if it was just for the sake of it and i wasn't really interested in going
exciting times over in a level bio i see:lol:

I feel like people go to Leeds for it's reputation (and I don't mean íts academic one )

Yeah - I think sometimes people just apply to unis just to fill up the 5 - there's absolutely no point if you don't want to go there.

More like me just be a weirdo who really wants to watch a cell burst

Going to check it out!

Week 0: And so it begins....

Today was finally my first day back (as much as I hate college, the holiday was way too long).

I hung out with friends until tutorial - getting to see everyone was really great!
Tutorial came around, we met all the new kids (I go to an FE college and so direct entry into second year is common) - Only 7 people from my original tutor group remain - and I think we have 6 new kids so it's really odd.

My friend shouted out at some point "Look Alby! Your name is on the wall" And low and behold, that's what happens when you get an A in AS Maths ( ( ) ). There were only three of us who got As, which is kinda sad But I guess that's the case when you move from a specialist maths school to the outside world.
After we finally sorted time tables out (I have an FM lesson on Fridays from 3:30-5 which is really kinda sad) we started off our UCAS applications and then left as soon as we could.

Plans for this weekend are:

  • Sleep
  • Start learning about schizophrenia - my psychology teacher has been going on about reading up on it for the past 3 months.
  • Go through Chapter 5 for maths (no idea what it is - but apparently we have a test)
  • Eh??? Contemplate existance?
  • Do some more UCAS stuff

And that is that

I guess I'm kind of looking forward to getting back into a routine, but **shrugs**

Anyway - hope people have a good weekend!
