Are the Tesco staff that watch over the self service checkouts supposed to be pushy?

Are the Tesco staff that watch over the self service checkouts supposed to be pushy as part of the job? I'm asking as I don't like using the self service checkouts, but one day, I needed a price check on a particular item so scanned it just so the price would be displayed on screen, then I could ask the guy stood watching the checkouts to cancel it for me.

When I asked him to cancel so I could pay at a traditional till, he said to pay for it here as if he was desperate for me to and gave me a :unimpressed: look when I told him no thanks, I'll pay at a staffed checkout.

Are they supposed to be pushy like this or was he just being just a little bit rude?

Rude- but maybe he thought he was being helpful in that you wouldn't have to queue up?

It was in the evening so the queues weren't an issue, plus I felt a tiny bit sorry for the cashier sat waiting for a customer.

yeah it's marked 'essential' in the person spec
Tbh self checkout staff have to walk around like headless chickens solving problems all the time. I’d be surprised if they DIDN’T show me any annoyance 😂

I knew I should have checked the packaging that little bit more carefully.

Cashiers don't "wait" for a customer. They don't own tesco, get rubbish wages and are just doing a job!
Self checkout staff at tesco are like the wee cashier at the tills just doing there jobs to get customers in and out the shop as quickly as possible.

You do unfortunately get staff at some tesco store on self checkouts being awkward towards customers and this isn't suppose to happen ok, they meant to be polite and helpful like the cashier at the tills would be.

Staff in lidi and poundland are very pushy and sometimes cheeky when you try to go to a cash desk they are pushing you towards the self checkouts instead, see point if the shop very busy etc then ask customers to goto the self checkouts but they don't. Cristise tesco but they not the only supermarket and shop to make customers use the self checkouts okay. It should be whatever the customers preference is ok.
You've done a weird action which has thrown the guy off. Give him a break.

Hi! No, the colleague shouldn’t have behaved in a manner that may have made you feel uncomfortable when on your shopping trip. As someone who works on self checkouts, I always try to encourage a friendly mannerism, and they should have allowed you to use a normal check-out. Sometimes we can get a bit stressed out if it is busy, though that’s no fault of your own. However, if you do want a price-check on an item, you are always welcome to walk up to a colleague and ask, even if they’re on the shop floor. I’m sorry you felt like this, and I hope it doesn’t happen again.

Sending love,
A (random) Tesco Colleague ❤️
