Behavioural categories would make observations explicit. Therefore, overlapping/vaguely described actions can be narrowed down to separate and explicit actions that can be observed. For example, if you’re observing anger in children, what would you count as being anger because the term anger is very vague? So you categorise the behaviour of anger in children into explicit observable behaviour like stomping feet, pointing fingers, pushing, etc. In a way, you’re standardising the observation so all the children you’re observing will only contribute to your statistics of your study if they show the behaviour you’ve categorised which apply to all children.
