    11. a) A polyhydroxylic compound, C4H8O4, was heated with excess acetic anhydride. On refluxing 2.87g of the product with 50cm^3 of molar sodium hydroxide solution, the residual alkali required 15cm^3 of molar hydrochloric acid for neutralisation. Calculate the number of hydroxyl groups per molecule of the original compound.

    b) A compound X has the following percentage composition by weight: C=64.9% H = 13.5% 0=21.6%. Oxidation yields a neutral compound Y which does not react with sodium. Further Oxidation of Y yields an acid Z. When 8cm^3 of the vapour of Y is sparked with excess oxygen, 32cm^3 of Carbon Dioxide is formed. Z forms only one silver salt which contains 64.7% by weight of silver. Identify X,Y,Z and xplain.

    I get the empirical formula for X = C4H10O ie an alcohol- butanol.
    Assuming the bold text means oxidation of X, then X is going to be a primary alcohol. Oxidation of primary alcohols produce aldehydes. so Y=butanal or C4H8O.
    Further oxidation of aldehydes produce carboxylic acids, ie Z. butanoic acid
