John Bercow says he will stand down as Commons Speaker at the next election or on 31 October, whichever comes first.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Bercow said his 10-year "tenure" was nearing its end and it had been the "greatest honour and privilege" to serve.

If there was no early election, he said leaving on 31 October would be the "least disruptive and most democratic" time to go.

The ex-Tory MP succeeded the late Michael Martin as Speaker in 2009. He has faced fierce criticism from Brexiteers who have questioned his impartiality.

In a break from normal convention, Mr Bercow was facing a challenge from the Conservatives in his Buckingham constituency at the next election - whenever it is called.

What do you think about this? Definitely an end of an era with respect to the UK Parliament, whatever your opinion of him.

Aside from brexit, everything I have seen and heard about him has been positive. When it comes to Brexit though, he has blown his impartiality, and its time to go when the response to you leaving is so one sided.

Good riddance to the worst Speaker since the Second World War (and yes, that includes the expenses corrupt ‘Gorbals Mick.’)

His decision to allow backbenchers to take control of the order paper and his political weaponisation of standing order 24 have taken a massive irreparable **** on the British constitution.

Hope he doesn’t get a peerage.

He was implicated quite heavily in the bullying scandal a few months back

Although he’s wrong about everything, he seems very likeable and made PMQs much more interesting and watchable.

Can’t think of any MP who would be half as good.

I actually think Nigel Farage would be a good speaker of the house 😂

I doubt he has much knowledge of Erskine May.

I'm a tremendous fan of John Bercow - sad to see him step down, not sure anyone can fill his shoes.

Fantastic entertainment and I love the way he has managed to anger so many hyper-sensitive people.

He has been completely impartial, which is exactly why brexiteers hated him, because he actually gave both sides the chance to talk, then the brexiteers got upset because they babbled **** 24/7

Not angered me, just glad to see the back of him because he has an ailment which no one can heal, we all know

Bercow overstepped his role and allowed backbench nobodies to control the house to the detriment of the government and ultimately this nation.

Never have I seen a more flagrant abuse of position in all my years.

Good riddance
