In case you've been under a rock for the last 24 hours, John Bercow has announced he's resigning on 31st October.

Who should replace him?

I've tried to put realistic candidates in the poll – what is 'realistic' may obviously change with time.

Hoyle all the way for me. He's shown himself quite capable and has a bit of a sense of humour about his work.

I wouldn't be depressed about either Harman or Laing though. Both are decent parliamentarians.

The problem with Harman is that she has no sense of humour and no sense of proportion.

The Harperson jibe hit home because she was likely to take issue with “chairman” or “policeman” and there has really been no change in this across 30 years.

Hoyle and Laing are much better in my view. Edward Leigh was very successful as Chair of the Public Accounts Committee but has subsequently become too involved with the ERG. I suspect that after a decade of Bercow most MPs are looking for neutrality.

I think that Hoyle should be the next by convention however I would like to see Evans given the chance.

Just hope it's not your MP, it's a major flaw in our Democracy the speaker is. It's should be unelected role

My MP has decent odds, not the favourite, but worth a tenner. I wouldn’t mind it that much. Sure it would be a tad annoying. But in all liklihood he’s going to win the seat anyway

It will basically mean you will live in a dictorship with no voice for as long as the speaker desides to work

It also means his constituents get to pandered to for the duration. Not a bad trade.

Chris Bryant would be good.

He has always been an expert on procedure; along with JRM. He is certainly boisterous enough to control the house. And he's not a Momentum slave, so maybe he could be impartial in the Chair.
