I’m wanting to do a foreign languages course at uni and am doing history and French a level. I was wondering if English language a level would harm my chances of getting into a top university as some consider it a ‘soft subject’.

I don’t think it’s ‘soft’.
It’s on preferred subject lists at places like UCL. Literature is very different, so choose the one you enjoy more.
