I’ve always identified as a straight man however recently a new lad has joined our work office and we hit it off straight away. Have got similar tastes, ambitions, personalities, people even joke that we are like twins or brothers.

The thing is after seeing him fairly close up stark rollocking naked I have been having all sorts of thoughts going through my head.

Is this ok?

Could be the same scenario for yourself as you sit reading this.

Well, and bare with me hear,

So recently I helped raise awareness about the epidemic which is male suicide amongst young men in the UK and discovered that there is a real suggestion that in some cases it could be due to “unexplained” feelings about sexuality, acceptance and bullying from others, self hate and simply feeling too far removed (not in line) with those around them.

Shockingly every single week some 84 men will succumb to the blackness that is suicide! A cold and startling fact on its own and when compared with females, male suicide in the U.K. is between 3 & 4 times higher and very often involves cases which are hard to explain or get to grips to.

Recently a large media organisation surveyed a range of men from around the country and from different backgrounds. Sadly 50% of gay men identified with thoughts of suicide, 24% had attempted to actually take their lives. Low self esteem, isolation, fear of judgement, fear of homophobic bullying being just a few of the reasons given.

At the same time there has been growing research into the subject of male sexuality as a whole with somewhat confusing statistics (for gay guys atleast) coming to light such as 21% of straight men admit to regularly watching (and getting off to) gay man on man pornography.

As a society we are far more accepting of sexualities other than hetro/straight and it is suggested that most people will fall on a scale from completely straight to
absolutely gay. With the extremities being rare and the majority moving fluidly along the scale through their lives.

Of the LGBT men who realise and are able to admit to themselves that they are gay or bi or whatever, 20% still feel ashamed or scared to even admit to sexual health workers that they are gay and are involved in lgbt Sex acts and with 65% preferring to
Use to use no condoms, may be missing out in crucial screening.
A total of 40% of bisexual men are not out in public or private due to fears of social stigma.

Recently the Telegraph reports that between 40-60% of under 30s do not feel they identify as either completely gay or straight - more commonly phrased as bisexual.

With that in mind have a think about the next time you’re having post game drinks or a social catch up at the local and the smart arse mate in your group makes some derogatory quirk about the latest “gay” thing to have tickled them. That alone could be the reason why half the team suppress their feelings further. Who knows your mate may be one of those
“Closet” cases and putting on a never ending act.
But as you all chuckle and involve yourselves in the banter that is occurring stop and think and look at the others because it could be out of the 11 of you who played that morning on the pitch 4 to 6 of you have the same feelings.

Of all self identifying bisexual men in the U.K. a staggering 90% are not out to family, friends or colleagues.

Attitudes are changing, love will always be love, and if you find yourself wondering about “that” guy or the mate we all have in our lives then remember that it’s ok to explore this path - if it’s not for you, that’s ok, it doesn’t make you gay but atleast you will know and not be constantly wondering mindlessly and fighting back the thoughts in your head.

And by knowing and being kind to your self as a society we may be able to save some of the 84 men who kill themselves every week.
